The Perry The Platypus Costume
I promised better pictures of The Boy’s Agent P Costume, and some instructions, so here ya go!
Here are some basic instructions, pictures follow.
Body:
At it’s simplest, you can do this with a green hoodie and sweatpants. Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t find a green hoodie, so I made a simple one out of fleece, by tracing around a current sweatshirt. (see pics below) I added a few pieces of ‘hair’ with black embroidery floss.
Bill:
The Duckbill was very easy! 2 pieces of craftfoam, cut into a bill shape. The bottom piece is slightly smaller than the top piece. I used a hole punch to make breathing holes on the bottom, and to make the holes for the elastic cording. Just tie the pieces together, and they go nicely over the nose, or even over the nose and chin (which is how The Boy liked to wear his).
Feet:
Very simple. A webbed foot cut from craft foam. Then I slid a scrap piece of foam through the shoe lace on his shoe. I placed duct tape behind it (see pics) and pressed the foot shape on top!
Tail:
The tail totally made the outfit. I cut the tail shape out of brown fleece, and sewed it together, leaving an opening at the top. I then stuff it VERY lightly with a little fiber fill. Then use pins to mark the tail into equal sections, several inches apart (see pics). Then sew in a zigzag down the tail. At the end, repeat the process in reverse, making the quilted x’s. Attach the tail to the bottom of the hoodie.
Hat:
Um, is a fedora.
Here are some other pictures, and some shots of “the making of Agent P”! Click to see big/slideshow.

I love it! I was so excited to see that you did this. I told my sister about it this weekend, and she said, “Man! I wish one of my kids wanted to be Agent P!” Mine did, when they saw your pictures, but we were too late then. (and I have a general no-making-costumes rule
So so so fantastic!
And did you have any kind of device to make his hilarious teeth-clacking noise?
2 thumbs way up from my girls! Shea requests an adult-sized version to wear next year.
Rachel -heh, glad ya liked it!
No, but I’m sure my husband would have figured out a device had I given him time!
Karen – Easy enough to too, just have her start looking for a green hoodie!
This is fantastic!!! I have been seeing these guys everywhere…from books to cartoons!!! great work!!!
Excellent! My kids love Phineas and Ferb.

looks fabulous!
My daughter was begging for a Perry costume to play dress-up and your tutorial was a lifesaver. I couldn’t find any sweats in the right color, so I riffed on your idea and made a one piece body (that’s what she wanted) for her using a sweatshirt and sweatpants of hers for the pattern. We cut a line down the back so she could get in it, and used strips of matching fleece to make two ties to hold it closed. We followed your directions for the beak, feet, and tail, and it came out fabulously. She loves it and wears it as often as she can. So thank you for making my job so much easier.
So glad it was a help! Agent P is the best
Thank you so much for providing the pictures and instructions. The costume looks awesome! My son wants to the Agent P for Halloween this year and I have been racking my brain about making the costume…I was thinking about going boxy like Candace’s platypus costume and cover it with green felt (can you imagine how much green felt I would need to cover a box or two to fit over a 5 year old). Yours looks so much easier! Thanks again!
So glad it was helpful! Would love to see pics of the completed costume
