One my sweetie’s favorite libations (other than a fancy craft beer!) on a summer evening is Citron & Tonic. So last time we were at the store, eyeing the big $30 bottle of Absolut Citron, we decided to see if we could make something similar (or even better) ourselves, for less money! I’d read previously that you could filter cheap vodka and get it closer to premium vodka using a water filter pitcher–and we already knew how to infuse spirits with citrus (remember Making Limoncello?) –, so we figured why not try?
We bought a less expensive vodka* and went home…

Thanks for all the feedback on my ‘teaching kids to read’ question the other day… lots of good input – very appreciated! If anyone else wants to weigh in, be sure to stop by
I’m missing my little one, who has been visiting myriad grandparents and other adventures. Will see his cute little face on Saturday!
(Here he is from a few weeks ago when
we went to the Botanical Gardens >>)
And also… If you’re a fan of Dabbled friend The Domestic Scientist, stop by and help her out… Apparently there are some great tools on the iPad for her autistic son.
For those…

The other day I had an inspiration… We have a mint plant that is growing like crazy, and I adore a little sprig of mint in my Iced Tea in the Summer time. So a recipe creation was in order… What about gelato, inspired by the flavors of good ol Southern iced tea? The experiment was quite a success – although next time I think I’ll add a bit of lemon zest to the mix to really capture a perfect iced tea. Go get the recipe over at Foodwhirl: Southern Mint Iced Tea Gelato.

I promised more on the food for the party – we did it as a brunch to try to beat the heat a little bit. Since it’s food related, I’ve actually posted the writeup over at Foodwhirl: Menu for the birthday party brunch food. So go check it out!
The menu included Deathstar Cantaloupe, Mr Slushie Dogs, Roast Bantha, and even Platypus Eggs!
(Thanks to the Evil Mad Scientists for the Deathstar Cantaloupe idea!)

I have a request for the tutorial to make the Perry the Platypus Cake, and since it’s needed in a hurry, I’m doing this tutorial in two parts. By the way, I did a really detailed tutorial on last year’s dragon cake, and this year’s cake is actually similar, if a little simpler. So it wouldn’t be a bad idea to read through that tutorial in case I miss anything I covered there, as far as techniques.
More pics of the cake and the party here!
We’ll start with the prep work: assembling your hardware, getting the shopping done, and…

For the Clone Wars section of the birthday party, (for the Phineas and Ferb themed cake, go here!) the hubby and I came up with the idea for upside down clone trooper helmet cupcakes. These cupcakes were the hit of the party with the five-year-old boy set, though I will warn you, they are a bit time consuming to assemble. But well worth it! So here’s how to do them.
Cupcakes: You’ll need good firm cake, similar to pound cake. Here’s the recipe I used. I don’t know if it was luck, or overfilling the cupcake cups, but this cupcake came…

Spotlight: Pork Ragu
Over at Talk of Tomatoes, Janelle has a tasty looking recipe for Pork Ragu! This looks like a wonderfully simple ‘go-to’ meal…
“I am in love with ragu. Shall I marry it? I made this ragu recently for lunch, and my eldest son says to me: “mom, this is the only thing I am willing to eat the rest of my life.” His way…

Since it’s wedding season, I thought you’d like these fabulous looking (and tasty) cookies! These cookies, basically iced and stacked sugar cookies, were used as wedding favors for a family wedding, and they were gorgeous. I originally published this idea in 2008, but here’s a cleaned up version of the tutorial. Here’s how they’re done.
Ingredients/Materials:
Cookie Dough:
- Prepare a large batch of cookie dough according to your favorite recipe. IMPORTANT: Your cookie dough recipe should not have any leavening in it (ie no baking powder or baking soda), so the cookies bake flat.
(The number of cookie cakes you need would determine the…

I remember making these when I was a kid… What a fun and unusual treat for Easter and/or Spring in general. I could totally see these for a baby shower brunch at each place setting, maybe topped with an edible flower. The how-to is below!
How to make Cake Eggs:
All you need:
Egg shells (Jumbo would yield larger results, but in this case, I thought brown would be pretty.)
Your favorite light in texture cake batter (for these I just used a white cake mix)
Using an icepick or other sharp pointy object, make a hole in the top of each egg shell. Carefully!…
