First day of Kindergarten…

We’ll return to our regularly scheduled Dabbled this week, but first some photos of the Cuteness on his first day of school. You’ll note he’s skeptical about this whole school thing, but we did manage to get a smile out of him finally!

Teaching kids to read…

So, a query for you more experienced parents out there:

The Boy just turned 5, and we’ve been wondering what and how much to do around beginning reading.   He loves to be read to — we read both picture and chapter books to him before bedtime every night, and he has a learning video game that he likes, that seems to have some basic phonics and sight words in it.  But he’s not really showing much interest in reading himself.   He can spell a few words, and is pretty good with letter sounds.  So I’m wondering… do we try to work…

A Quilt Dilemma

Ok, for all you quilt experts out there, I have a query.

My mom just sent me up 2 quilts that she’s apparently had packed away in the attic forever.  One was made by my great grandmother, and is in pretty bad shape.  It’s fraying around the edges, and was (I’m assuming) a quilt made for using, not displaying.  The other was made by my Great Aunt Lottie, and it in much better shape.  Both smell musty, even after washing.

So, what the heck do I do with these? (Apologies in advance for the poor photos..) I need ideas! Do I try…

Fun with Kids: How to do a photo safari

One of the fun activities that we’ve been doing, to try to get our little video game fiend (yah, he’s a born geek) out of the house is taking a ‘photo safari’–sometimes we call it a ‘photography field trip’… The 4 year old gets possession of mommy’s point and shoot camera, and we go for a walk–sometimes through the woods, sometimes through the neighborhood. I’m actually pretty amazed at some of his shots (many are pure luck, like achieving the rule of thirds because he wiggled his hands accidentally!) but I do find it fun to look at the world…

A story of a lovely weekend – Cooking with Friends

Ah Monday…   The weekend has come and gone, and what a fun weekend it was!  I decided to make Guinness Ice Cream (my special St Patty’s treat will be coming later this week!), so I needed some adults over to help me eat it…

So while the guys worked on a new terraced community garden, the chicks made icecream. Well, sort of… it took a long time, and there was a lot of waiting involved.

Eventually, we all had homemade chili and cornbread in an impromptu kitchen dinner party.

Oh Joy! The Flu!

Sorry for being MIA for the past few days. For those who don’t follow me on twitter, I’ve had the flu. (Yes, I can still tweet from my blackberry with a 102 fever!) Apparently I’m getting better today, as I’ve managed to make it out of bed and to the computer. We’ll technically sitting on the bed typing on the laptop, but you know what I mean.

So I finally went to the Dr. today, and they confirmed that I do have the flu, probably/maybe the swine flu — apparently it’s so common these days they don’t routinely swab for…
