Tutorial: How to Make the Doctor Who Dalek Cake

As promised yesterday, here are more details on the Doctor Who Dalek Cake.  You know I’m a big believer in showing you that YOU can make a really cool cake, and I do one every year for the Boy’s birthday.  Past years: Angry Birds cupcakesDragon Cake,  Perry the Platypus Cake, and Clone Trooper cupcakes.  So, today I’ve promised some of the details of how to make this cake yourself.  Tomorrow I’ll try to get up some of the decor, and a wrap up :)
For my geek friends, these Daleks are based on the New Dalek Paradigm from the 2010 Matt Smith episode, where the Doctor threatens the Daleks with a Jammie Dodger as a weapon, which is a favorite episode of my Birthday Boy.  … [ KEEP READING ]

Re-design update: a new 404 page

Re-design update: a new 404 page
As part of the changes I’m working on to dabbled.org, I decided to create a fun 404 page (you know, the Page Not Found thing you get with a bad link). The new background is watercolor paper, so I created an effect of the paper being torn to see what was underneath–and of course some cute robots peeking through. And the effect even covers part of the header. I thought it was a pretty cute trick. You can see it by going to any link on the site that doesn’t exist, like http://dabbled.org/slkdfjs. I’ve seen several cute 404 pages recently, but mine was inspired by the one on Swiss Miss (great design site).… [ KEEP READING ]

Illustration Friday: Launch (Rooster Sketch)

Illustration Friday: Launch (Rooster Sketch)
And I’m back from my art hiatus with an Illustration Friday!! Really, I have been so busy with web design stuff, that I haven’t taken the time to draw, and that’s just sad.  So I’ve had this robotic rooster in my head (he’s eventually going to be a big piece) and here’s my first attempt at a sketch of him.  Doesn’t it look like he’s just launched a football into the air?   I really like this sketch so much I don’t want to mess it up by adding more…  but alas I need to keep working on it!  Does that ever happen to anyone else?… [ KEEP READING ]

Sketch Day – Knight and Dragon

Today’s ‘really, dot still does draw’ sketch… a knight and his foe. I think the tiny dragon is so cute. :)

2 Waiting Robots

I love the personalities… almost like one is the reverse of the other! I decided to do thing-a-day this month, and I’ve already missed a day and it’s only day 4. I’ll do a makeup day for day 2 at some point. So this is my thing-a-day, and also my illustration friday, the first one I’ve managed to do this year. Oh, and if you missed it, be sure to check out the ‘how to make octopus cookies’ from yesterday! I finally got the tutorial up…

New Art! Ballooning Bot

So, I tried to shoehorn in my drawing of Phineas and Ferb meet The Clone Wars for the Early theme on IF last week, but (although the piece came out AWESOME–the Boy loves it!) it was kinda a cheat. So here’s another take. Oh! Foodwhirl giveaway ends today! Go enter quick!
Here is the ballooning robot in the early morning light.  I imagine he got up early, and just headed out on an adventure.  Not quite sure where the winds will take him, as his craft has very little ability to steer. (Maybe he’ll see the Ship of Gnomes!) Cute huh? … [ KEEP READING ]
